History
Before the navy had its own concert band, musicians were already on board ships. From 1799 onwards, ship commanders were officially allowed to allow musicians to sail along. They entertained the crew during long sea voyages. With the permission of King William III, the Staff Music of the Royal Navy was founded in 1864.

The Staff Music of the Royal Navy was disbanded after the outbreak of the Second World War. After the liberation of the Netherlands, 18 former members of the music staff reported to Rotterdam. On August 1, 1945, the then Minister of the Navy decided to set up a music corps again. The official name of this music corps became the Marine Band of the Royal Navy.
