Pelle van Esch

As a ten-year-old, Pelle dazzled the Amsterdam Concertgebouw with his own composition ‘Strange Birds’, during the New Year’s concert of the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. He has written compositions for Joseph Alessi and the New European Ensemble, among others. He also composed a Concertino for bass trombone, ‘Homage to Gershwin’, which he performed with the Residentie Orchestra.

As a performing artist on bass trombone, Pelle is also quite successful. In 2017 he won the Princess Christina Competition for young performing artists. In the same year he also received the title ‘Classic Young Master’. In 2020 he was co-winner of the George Roberts Bass Trombone Competition and in 2021 he was a finalist in the Donald Yaxley Bass Trombone Competition.

In addition to bass trombone, he also plays tuba, tenor trombone and euphonium. Pelle learned to play from his mother Ingrid, Pete Saunders, Brandt Attema, Ben van Dijk and Dick Bolt. At the Royal Conservatory in The Hague he studied composition with Reza Namavar and Peter Adriaanz.

He acquired his first position with the North Netherlands Orchestra at the age of 19 and currently holds the position of bass trombonist with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.
